Everyone has different skin tones. Those different skin tones will equate to different shades of bronze when using a sunless tanner. Tanning solutions are available in various shades to suit different skin tones, so it is common to desire a darker shade after completing an at-home tanning session. Luckily for everyone, it is much easier to add more color than remove it! If you’d like a darker color than what one use of a sunless tanner gives you, try these tips to help you achieve the perfect bronze shade.
Prep the Skin
When prepping for a self-tan, the goal is to make sure your skin is ready for a glow. If your skin is not looking or feeling fresh, your tan may end up looking dull, streaky or uneven. Exfoliating your skin before using a self-tanner is vital to keeping your tan fresh. Keeping your skin hydrated is an important step in the self-tanning process prior and after the tan dries. Nourished, silky skin is happy, healthy skin.
Look for Higher DHA
Our products have an active ingredient and darkening agent called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). All sunless tanners have DHA in them. It is how you obtain your faux glow and bronzed color. The DHA interacts with the dead surface cells in the epidermis to darken skin color and simulate a tan. The darkening effect takes place in about four hours and wears off when your outer layer of skin has naturally shed. To get a darker first tan, find a sunless tanning product that has a higher percentage of DHA in it. Nervous about being too dark on your first try? Check out our next tip!
Use Shower Products with Lower pH Levels
High pH levels work against DHA by neutralizing it. Pay attention to your face and body soaps and moisturizers. They may have a high pH level. There are also products on the market that can help lower your skin’s pH balance. This will help to keep your tan longer and darker!
Find a Buildable Solution
Since the DHA percentage varies, you can re-do your tan to create a darker shade. Allow 8-10 hours for your first layer to dry and absorb into the skin. Then, if you want another layer to get a darker shade, go for it. An example of our best buildable solution is our Self Tanning Mousse. This mousse can be used day after day to obtain the exact shade you desire.
Don’t Shower Right Away
Allow time for the sunless tanning product to absorb into your skin and dry completely. If you shower too long, or with too hot of water, the sunless tanning product could come off. An even better tip is to just do a quick, lukewarm rinse after your sunless tan has developed for at least 8 hours. Don’t use soap or lotions after this first rinse. After 24 hours have gone by, then shower as you normally would. Don’t forget to moisturize!
Give It Time
Depending on the product you are using, you may not see results right away. Some of our products are gradual tanning products while others are instant. Make sure you are using the desired product correctly, following each of these tips and you will see a natural change in your skin’s color.
