What Ingredients Are In Self-Tanning Products?

What Ingredients Are In Self-Tanning Products?

We know our skin is the largest organ of the human body. And it is so important to protect it. Protecting it means paying attention to what you put on your body, from head to toe. That is why there has been a big push in recent years to eliminate parabens and sulfates from products as we know they are harmful. But how? It isn’t like we are drinking shampoo and lotions.

Chemicals Are Absorbed Through Your Skin

According to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, the skin can absorb between 64% and 100% of total contaminant dosage. 100%?!? It all depends on what is going on the skin, and how big the chemicals are in the products as to how much is absorbed, but why would you want any harmful chemicals on your skin, ever?

There are three ways products enter your skin when applied:

  • Directly through skin cells
  • Around the skin cells
  • Through hair follicles and sweat ducts

self tanning ingredients

Research shows that anything put on your head or face is absorbed faster there than anywhere else on the body, so it is very important to pay attention to what you put on those areas. Think of all of the products we use: makeup, hair products, hair dye, any kind of shampoos or conditioners, facial cleansers, the list goes on! Are those products actually safe for your skin or are they secretly, but slowly, causing damage?

Are Self-Tanners Safe?

Solrae Sunless Tanning products are safe to use! Our products have an active ingredient and darkening agent called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). You obtain your faux glow and bronzed color by coating your skin with the DHA which then interacts with the dead surface cells in the epidermis to darken skin color and simulate a tan. The result lasts for several days. It is considered safe by the FDA and is derived from beet or cane sugar, which we love! You can think of your skin as an avocado or piece of fruit because the DHA reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of skin causing a browning effect, like when a piece of fruit browns over time. The darkening effect takes place in about four hours and wears off when your outer layer of skin has naturally shed.

Now, that is not to say nothing is absorbed into our skin from our products. However, because we use naturally derived, organic, vegan, and chemical-free ingredients, what does get absorbed is safe.

What Are Some Other Ingredients in Solrae Products?

The best rule of thumb for any product is that if you can’t pronounce it, it is likely worth researching. We aren’t all scientists, so by all means we encourage everyone to research all ingredients in every product they use to make sure it is safe. Generally speaking, here is a list of our top ingredients in our products:

    • Caffeine Extract– Dehydrates fat cells making skin appear smoother and more firm.
    • Kukui Nut Oil– Contains essential fatty acids that help the body retain water and cleanse the skin. Helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
    • Niacinamide– Skin-restoring ingredient that offers multiple anti-aging benefits such as improving the appearance of large pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines, and dullness.
    • Hydrating Sweet Almond Oil– Clients with sensitive skin or allergies must patch test first or consult your physician.
    • Natural Lemon, Orange, and Apple Fruit Extracts

Advocate for Safe Products

It is up to consumers to be aware of what is in everyday products that we use, whether it is putting it directly on our skin or ingesting, inhaling, etc. We advocate for healthy skin and encourage everyone to protect the skin you are in as much as you can. Avoiding harmful UV rays, wearing appropriate hats and clothing when outdoors and applying a sunblock or sunscreen that won’t harm us is vital. Please always consult your doctor with any concerns and you can always ask us about our ingredients.
